Former Tramsheds, Tracks, Rosettes and Turning Circles

Sydney had a vast tram network - one of the world's largest - from 1879 until 1961. The lines were ultimately closed due largely to their popularity amongst the general public; and their hatred by motorists (who blamed the trams for traffic congestion).

The images here are of some of the remaining elements of that wonderful system.

The Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point (originally an island). Designed by architect Jørn Utzon, constructed 1959-1973.

NB : The Fort Macquarie Tram Depot - which already occupied the site - was demolished in 1958. It had closed three years earlier.
