Built as a pumping station for the Sydney & Suburban Hydraulic Power Company, before electricity provided most of Sydney's power needs. Operation commenced 1890.
In 1975 the building was taken over by the Tank Stream Brewing Company, and now serves as the Pumphouse Bar.
