Signs of the Times

I photograph signs almost everywhere I go - great way to get a feel for the place. Street signs, shop awnings, warnings messages, graffiti and so on.

Middle Head, Sydney, NSW, Australia
Outer Middle Head Battery. Designed to protect Sydney from ships entering the Harbour (built partly in response to the Crimean war), construction began in 1873.

Modified in 1882 (5 of the 9 pits were 'removed') to afford construction of a 2-gun, 10" 25-ton battery. The remaining pits were modified to accomodate 80 pound guns, removed in 1884.

The Battery was finally dismantled in 1953.
