    West Head, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Originally home to the Guringai People, the area was declared a National Park in 1894 (making it the second oldest in NSW, preceded only by the Royal National Park in 1879).

    This particular area is the Basin Track Aboriginal Engraving Site - a large rock surface depicting men, fish, hopping wallabies and a club.

    Aboriginal rock pool and grinding grooves, Gadyan track. Created by the Cammeraygal people, these grooves resulted from repeated use as a place to sharpen various stone tools. The adjacent water was likely for drinking, as well as wetting the tools during sharpening.

    NB : the site of what is now Balmoral Oval was a swamp during this time, most likely used as a supply of fresh water for those who ate here.

    Callan Point Aboriginal Engravings on the Cliff-Face Walk. One of five distinct aboriginal sites here (the others are shell middens, approximately 4,500 years old); showing a combination of aboriginal and colonial carvings.

    Some (notably the shield) may have even been carved more recently, by inhabitants of the Callan Park asylum.
