The village of Berrima in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The name Berrima is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning either "southward" or "black swan".
Originally home to the Dharawal, Europeans first explored the area in the 1790s; with settlement beginning in 1830.

This particular building is the Surveyor General Inn (named for Surveyor General Thomas Mitchell), constructed 1834 - using convict labour - for William Harper, Mitchell's former assistant. William handed the building over to his son James, who licensed it the following year.
It's been operating continuously ever since.
