Gunning

Gunning, about 260km south-west of Sydney. Originally home to both the Ngunnawal people and the Gundungurra people - and possibly the Pajong 'Fish River Tribe' people - (it's a large area), it began colonial life 1821-1824 when Hamilton Hume and William Hovell explored the area; and the route south.

This route was extended north and ultimately became the Hume Highway, following the original line until 1993. It now bypasses Gunning entirely, and sits just to the south of the town.
