This particular building is Central Railway Station, on the former site of the Devonshire Street Cemetery (the remains were exhumed and re-interred at several other Sydney cemeteries). The station has operated since 1855; this building was designed by the Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon and constructed 1901-1906.

The rail layout itself was designed by engineer Henry Deane (the focus of the nearby 'Henry Deane Plaza'), Engineer in Chief of the New South Wales Government Railways.
