Documenting Australia's rich Aboriginal and European history.
Ryde : Willandra
The Sydney suburb of Ryde, in the city's 'Northern Suburbs' area - on the north bank of the Parramatta River. Originally home to the Wallumettagal Aboriginal tribe, the area (everything between the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers) became known as the 'Field of Mars' following European arrival.
The name was changed to 'Ryde' (after the town on the Isle of Wight) in about 1840, most likely from the early settlers (GM Pope himself was from the Isle of Wight).
