Dawes Point : Workers Flats

This building and its neighbours (collectively referred to simply as 'Workers Flats of Lower Fort Street') originally served as accommodation for those employed on the nearby wharves. Designed by Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon, constructed around 1910-1912 on a site vacated by 19thC housing (much of it was demolished shortly after the plague outbreak of 1900).

Lower Fort Street - stretching from Observatory Hill (formerly 'Fort Phillip') to the Dawes Point Battery. The origin of the name is uncertain - it may refer to either, or both, forts.

NB : since being divided by a quarry in the 1820s, the street has been referred to as 'Upper' and 'Lower'.
