The estate was named 'Gladesville' when it was subdivided and sold in November 1855.

This particular item is the sculpture 'Illuminatrope', Banjo Paterson Park. Created by artists Gabrielle Bates & David Hashimoto for the City of Ryde, unveiled 29 Jan 2019.

The park itself was formerly the grounds of the Barton family's 1830s 'Rockend Cottage', later [1922-1974] used for the Harold Meggitt Limited Linseed Oil Company's factory (the cottage itself was used as office space).

Following the closure and demolition of the factory - and a great deal of public 'agitation', the land was acquired by the State Government and Ryde Municipal Council and converted to a waterfront park in 1978.
