Jenolan Caves, Blue Mountains, Australia
Jenolan Caves. Approximately 340 million years old, used for centuries and first mapped 1835-1840.
The caves - initially known as the Fish River Caves - came under New South Wales Government control in 1866, becoming only the second area in the world reserved for the purpose of conservation. In 1884 the name was changed to Jenolan Caves, based on the Gundungurra word "Genowlan" ('high place shaped like a foot').
