The Tarpeian Way - named after Rome's 'Tarpeian Rock' - Gate steps. Bennelong Point was originally Bennelong Island, with a small area providing access to/from the mainland at low tide.
This are was filled 1818-1821 with rocks excavated from the Bennelong Point peninsula. The entire area was leveled to create a low platform and to provide suitable stone for the construction of Fort Macquarie.
