Aboriginal Carvings in Balls Head Reserve
---
This particular location is a rock carving site for the Cammeraygal Aboriginal clan. Although the exact significance of the engravings is unknown, the site itself occupies a high rock platform - originally affording extensive views both up and down the harbour.
Buried during construction of the adjacent coal loader, the artworks were uncovered in the 1960s. A possible midden site was also located nearby in 2017.
NB : the main carving shows a man inside a whale - possibly an attempt to cure an illness (an Aboriginal custom in this area).
Waverton, Sydney, NSW, Australia
The Sydney suburb of Waverton, in the city's 'Lower North Shore' area. Named in 1929 after early resident Robert Old's home 'Waverton Estate' (which in turn was named for the English village).
