George Barney [Engineer]

George Barney was an officer of the Royal Engineers, reaching the rank of Captain in 1825.

Arriving in Sydney in Dec 1835, he soon found himself in charge of a number of engineering projects around the colony. His work can be seen in the form of Circular Quay's sandstone seawall, gun emplacements at Bradleys Head, a breakwater at Newcastle, pier harbours at Wollongong and a whole lot more.

Sydney, Australia

Part of Semi-circular quay's (now just 'Circular Quay') seawall - constructed using convict labor 1837-1844, overseen by Captain George Barney (Royal Engineers). Most of the sandstone came from the precipice dividing the two ends of Argyle Street (resulting in the Argyle Cut), with the remainder cut from the Tarpeian Way (next to the Opera House).
