The Champ de Mars (Field of Mars), at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Named after the Campus Martius ('Mars Field') in Rome, which in turn is named for the Roman God of War.
Originally an area reserved for market gardening, it was levelled and converted to its current form shortly after construction of the École Militaire in 1765.
